Hellenic Community Of Cape Town – Statement regarding the fire at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George

Official Statement Re Greek Orthodox Church Fire:
It has come to our attention that there are news articles in Cape Town that have indicated that the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George built in 1904 has been destroyed by a fire.
The above claims are incorrect. Although part of the Community Hall caught alight, due to the fast action of our neighbours in the Woodstock Community as well as the Fire Stations based in Cape Town and Salt River, the major damage was limited to the Hall.
We would like to Sincerely thank all who acted fast and by the Grace of God, our church escaped unscathed.
The cause of the Fire is as yet unknown and is currently being investigated. The fire has destroyed our candles that were being produced for the upcoming Easter Celebrations. The Administrative Committee and the Community will be mobilising a plan in the next few days to replace the candles destroyed.
Anyone wanting to make a donation in lieu of the fire please contact our offices at [email protected]
